Maximiliano “Max” Bello is a specialist on global marine protected areas at the Blue Marine Foundation. A recognized ocean policy expert, Max has worked in the environmental arena for more than two decades to advance marine conservation initiatives and prioritize the importance of marine ecosystems in multilateral fora. He has worked for leading organizations tackling environmental issues, including the Minderoo Foundation, Pew Charitable Trusts, Oceana, World Wildlife Fund, Blue Whale Center, Mission Blue, and Island Conservation. Max has worked closely with governments and civil society within the UNFCCC, including serving as the COP25 Presidential Committee Ocean Representative in 2019.
He holds an M.S. in Natural Resource Management from the University of Edinburgh, as well as a degree in veterinary sciences from Universidad Católica de Temuco in Chile. He has been active in several mutli-stakeholder and international campaigns, such as Our Antarctica, bringing greater attention to the critical importance of global conservation efforts, and the growing impact on our oceans from human influences, such as climate change, over-fishing, and marine pollution.
